SO ABOUT THAT SCOTT PILGRIM ANIME

Posted by BastardFromBrooklyn - November 18th, 2023

So okay, major spoiler warnings upfront. the long and short of it is that the anime was fantastic, and I highly recommend the show where you're familiar with Scott Pilgrim or if you've just heard of the series recently. Now into spoiler warning territory. If you haven't guessed by now, I'm a huge fan of Scott Pilgrim, from the books, to the movie, to the game, It's all great by my standards. It's had both a positive impact on my dream of wanting to become an artist, and my personal life with how I treat my relationships with other people. I was admittedly a bit hesitant when the announcement was made however... hah, no I wasn't. The inner fanboy within me was bursting for joy the second the trailers dropped, enough to completely cloud my judgement, so take this 'review' from a biased perspective. So, Scott dies at the end of episode 1, well not exactly. However, Scott is absent for a majority of the series so the story can instead focus on Ramona Flowers and other characters. During the binge-watch session of this show I engaged in yesterday, I was admittedly a bit worried from this decision to change the story so dramatically and in such little time as well, because Scott Pilgrim's personal improvement as a personal is the main reason why the previous incarnations of Scott Pilgrim worked so well and having him missing would render the development null. Although, after I finished the series, I was admittedly grateful for the anime giving the spotlight to other characters since they're also incredibly charming, with Kim Pine in particular being my favorite. The series also takes a different approach to tackling Ramona's evil exes through having Ramona instead get emotional closure with her exes instead of having Scott defeat them all, since Scott doesn't reappear until episode 7 where it's revealed that his future self (AKA Book/Movie canon Scott) had taken present Scott away from Ramona to prevent them from meeting due to Future Scott having a rough time with Future Ramona. I also enjoy getting to develop the exes as characters in the series, even if those fight scenes were admittedly kickass. This newspost is getting overly long so I'll rapid-fire go through all the remaining thoughts I have. Animation was fantastic, especially during the scenes where the animators really get to show off like the minimal amount of fight scenes. The voice acting was great across the board, no issues here. The series was more raunchy than I would except with both the Kim x Roxie kiss and the Todd x Wallace kiss catching me super off-guard, though I ain't complaining. This show is funny, made me lol and even XD a few times. The soundtrack is incredible. The characters are great, although Wallace is more cynical than in the previous adaptations but that isn't a huge deal. The flashback scenes looked spectacular. The way they incorporated the 'bread makes you fat?' line was so clever it actually made me soyface. Matthew Patel is the leader now and that's really funny. Did I mention the animation was fucking breathtaking? The fact that ended the show with the Plumtree song was so perfect it nearly made my cry, magnificent. So yeah, SCOTT PILGRIM ANIME, IT GOOD, GO WATCH IT. peace.
